Whose strategy is it anyway?

Posted by David on Tuesday, April 24, 2007

It has been fascinating to listen and watch what is either a slip of the tongue or just an abrogation of responsibility in a number of quarters since the launch of the National Skills Strategy.

  • The strategy is the result of the most comprehensive sector labour market research for over 30  years.
  • The best employers have led the development of the strategy
  • Key trade associations and government agencies have fully endorsed both the need for a joined up strategy and the strategy content itself

The strategy is not People 1st’s – it is the sectors!

People 1st certainly have a number of key roles to fulfil including developing and maintaining The Skills Passport and sorting out the qualifications mess – but these are roles and actions for People 1st within the sectors strategy. Talk of People 1st’s strategy strikes me as preparing an opt out or simply a dereliction of duty – pretty pointless  if we want to ensure success for the sector in a more competitive world.

Whether the strategy succeeds is dependent upon all parties within the sector taking responsibility, working together and making it happen. This is not a time to talk about “People 1st’s strategy” its a time for action and leadership.

What will you / can you do to deliver the 10 point plan and success?
